火焰光度检测器 (FPD) 可检测低至约 200 ppb 的硫化氢(H2S ) 或二氧化硫 (SO2 )等含硫化合物，以及低至 10 ppb 的含磷化合物。虽然并非 100% 选择性，但 FPD 对硫和磷化合物的灵敏度比对碳氢化合物的灵敏度高 10 万倍。磷响应呈线性，而硫响应呈指数级（硫浓度增加一倍，峰面积增加四倍）。
FPD 的设计与 FID 类似，不同之处在于检测器主体为不透光型，并且有第二股氢气流吹扫光电倍增管 (PMT) 和富氢火焰之间的光路。PMT 前方安装了一个带通滤光片（硫的波长为 393 nm，磷的波长为 525 nm），这样就能检测到硫或磷的发射，而其他波长的辐射会被滤除。
双FPD检测器配备两个PMT和滤光片，可同时检测硫和磷。

单或双 FPD 均可配备 FID 收集电极和静电计，可在 PMT 对硫和磷化合物进行响应的同时检测碳氢化合物峰。FID 响应不如纯 FID 灵敏，因为富氢火焰针对硫和磷的检测进行了优化，而非碳氢化合物的检测。用户只需使用内置的 EPC 气体控制器调节氢气/空气混合比，即可轻松优化硫磷响应与碳氢化合物响应。
