热导检测器 (TCD) 可检测所有分子，常用于固定气体分析（ O2 、 N2 、CO、 CO2 、 H2S 、NO 等），因为目标分析物在其他更灵敏的检测器上响应不佳。TCD 可检测从 100% 到约 100 ppm 的浓度，基线平坦且峰形尖锐。当峰宽或基线不平坦时，300 ppm 的检测限更为现实。对于更低的检测限，HID 检测器可能更适合无机物，而 FID 检测器则可为碳氢化合物提供 1ppm 的检测限。

TCD 由四根钨铼灯丝组成，构成惠斯通电桥。电流流过灯丝，使其升温。载气（通常为氦气，导热性极高）流过灯丝，以恒定的速率带走热量。其中两根灯丝仅暴露于载气（参比），另外两根暴露于载气/样品流。当导热性低于载气的样品分子离开色谱柱并流过两根样品灯丝时，灯丝的温度会升高。温度升高会使惠斯通电桥失去平衡，并在样品分子通过检测器时产生峰值。
如果 GC 未检测到载气压力，灯丝保护电路会切断电流，从而防止灯丝损坏，但并非在所有情况下都能防止灯丝损坏。TCD 配备用户可更换的灯丝，以防灯丝烧坏。
