The switching mirror directs the light beam between the reference and sample channels in double-beam optical configurations, which is critical for baseline stability and accurate absorbance measurements. With a typical service lifetime of 3–8 years, the mirror's reflective surface can degrade over time, particularly in environments with high ambient temperature and humidity, which may cause surface fogging or mold growth on the optical coating.
